Faulkner has taught creative writing at Duke University since 2002. Before that she taught poetry and poetics at the University of Texas-Austin, creative nonfiction and American literature at Sacred Heart University, creative nonfiction and African American literature at the University of Connecticut, and American literature at Yale University. She is the author of Dispatches from a Not-So-Perfect Life: Or How I Learned to Love The House, The Man, The Child, and the writer of an upcoming play, All of Them Riding on Horses. She has been a consulting poetry editor at the Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion, Harvard Divinity School since 2007.
